Shirley Preiss was born in Kentucky in 1910 — a full 10 years before American women gained the right to vote. She first voted in a presidential election in 1932, for FDR. She’s voted in every presidential election since, but that’s all about to change due to Arizona’s draconian voter ID law.

This is the fourth YouTube segment of the videotaped deposition of Dr. Stephen Swift Brockway, formerly of THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg, taken for the wrongful death/medical malpractice lawsuit, BURNE v THE MEADOWS. Segments 1 through 3 are also available on YouTube and are suggested viewing. It is recommended they be watched in chronological order (1,2,3,4) in order to follow the deposition testimony easily. THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg is the renowned, remote and private facility that has treated such glitterati and public figures as Rush Limbaugh, Kate Moss, Elle MacPherson, Cindy McCain, and Eric Benet.

In November 2004, Dr. Brockway was an in-house, on-staff Psychiatrist at The Meadows of Wickenburg and was the attending psychiatrist for R. Matthew “Matt” Burne who died from suicide while an inpatient there on November 28, 2004.

Watch Dr. Brockway give sworn depositional testimony regarding THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg’s unlocked and unsecured Acute Unit, their open campus philosophy, his uncertainty about closed-circuit cameras, his interpretation of Policy #NSG750, and his clinical belief and judgment that (quote), “If we have 70 patients at The Meadows, there might be 20 at any one time that have suicidal ideation. So it’s a matter of degree. I put people on eye-to-eye when it’s a fairly serious suicidal ideation.” Who determines what a “seriousl suicidal ideation” looks like, and shouldn’t ALL suicidal ideation at a $1000.00+/day hospital or ANY hospital be taken seriously and patients protected?

Additional and detailed information about this video will be added periodically. Please check back for an updates. For more information go to Break the Silence at: www.Break-the-Silence.org

THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg - Wrongful Death Lawsuit Deposition 6

Posted on December 10, 2008 by roy

This is the continuation (marked
PART 6) of the videotaped deposition of Judy Beard, R.N. from THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg. In order to put Ms. Beard’s testimony in context, it’s important to view PART 5 of this deposition - and read the related notes - first and prior to watching this segment. It is titled, THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg - Wrongful Death Lawsuit Deposition 5, and is also available on YouTube. THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg is the renowned, remote and private facility that has treated such glitterati and public figures as Rush Limbaugh, Kate Moss, Elle MacPherson, Cindy McCain, and Eric Benet.

Judy Beard’s deposition was taken for the wrongful death/medical malpractice lawsuit, BURNE v THE MEADOWS, filed by the parents of R. Matthew “Matt” Burne who died from suicide while an inpatient at THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg.

Ms. Beard’s testimony presents a clear and candid example of many of the widely-held misconceptions and beliefs about suicide and suicide prevention. She justifies her interpretation of Meadows’ nursing policy #NSG750 and (her) failure to follow it as written with words such as “imminent” and “coping mechanism,” and rationalizes her judgments on her belief that said policy “probably could have been written better.” Beard further claims that if this policy (#NSG750) were to be followed as written, that - in addition to Matt Burne - “probably 30 other patients” would need to be on Eye-to-Eye observation at any given time (at THE MEADOWS) since (quote from the 3:59 minute marker forward) “A lot of people that come in with those kinds of problems have had suicidal ideation or…So it would be more of a discretion of the staff as whether some meant do these patients, have they had, suicidal ideation. Do they think about this? Yeah, I would say probably the general population that needs treatment like that - that has crossed their mind several times. We wouldn’t necessarily put them on Eye-to-Eye. That wouldn’t make sense in the kind of program it is.”

Apparently and tragiclly, Beard is correct, and her decision to use her “descretion” in interpreting this policy failed her patient, Matt Burne. Both Matt Burne and Denise Lee Dixon clearly expressed their suicidal thoughts, along with their severe levels of anxiety and depression (two indicators or markers for suicide)to the staff at THE MEADOWS. Neither was place on Eye-to-Eye observation. Both completed suicide while inpatients at THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg. Denise died in March of 1999 and Matt in November of 2004.

As a Level 1 Psychiatric Acute Hospital that claims to treat Affective Disorders (e.g. anxiety, severe depression, PTSD, and Bi-Polar disorder), shouldn’t THE MEADOWS of Wickenburg BE (quote) “the kind of program” that WOULD put those patients with suicidal ideation on Eye-to-Eye observation, even if it were 30 patients at the same time? If this program wouldn’t do that, than what type of program IS IT?

It is crucial that the suicidal patient be essed, observed, and managed correctly and supported through his/her suicidal and emotional crisis. In fact, it is a life and death situation. When one is admitted to ANY hospital or facility, inpatient safety is key. For more information go to Break the Silence at: www.Break-the-Silence.org
